In Florida, the elected county office of
Tax Collector was established as an independent unit of government
by the State Constitution of 1885. Consequently, Tax Collectors
are referred to as Constitutional Officers. As the chief revenue
collector within the county, the Tax Collector is elected
to a four-year term in the presidential election year.
The Tax Collector’s Office is responsible for providing
a wide range of services to the citizens and taxpayers of
Lake County on behalf of other governmental units, including
but not limited to; the Florida Department of Revenue, the
Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Board
of County Commissioners, the School Board, fourteen municipalities,
two Hospital Districts and seventeen special taxing districts.
These
services consist primarily of the collection and administration
of ad valorem taxes, non ad valorem assessments, motor vehicle
and vessel registration and title fees, occupational license
taxes, tourist development taxes and hunting and fishing license
fees.
